“Have ever wished you could help people recover from hurricanes, earthquakes or other natural disasters?  Have you wondered who would help your community if one of these events happened here?  If you have and are ready to lend a helping hand, you might be interested in completing Community Emergency Response Team training.

CERT training is a nationally recognized program to prepare volunteers, including teenagers like you, in disaster response and emergency preparedness.  The training will take place at Glen Burnie High School during October and November.

This is a great opportunity for anyone considering a career in the medical field, fire department, or other emergency first responder positions.  For more information, contact Mr. Runner in B101 or attend an information meeting and pick-up required permission paperwork in B101 at 2:30pm after school on Wednesday, 11 October.”

From Mr. Kidd: 10/6-10/11

“Do you ask ‘why’ a lot?  Do you enjoy sincere and civil debate and discussion? Do you ask questions like:  What is human nature?  Do we have free-will? What do I owe other people in my daily life, and why?  Besides preparing me for college and career, what else can my GBHS education do for me? How can learning about new things make my life richer—and better—as our GBHS Mission Statement promises?

If you ask these kinds of questions, you may be interested in philosophy or may even already be a philosopher!  The word ‘Philosophy’ is Greek.  ‘Philo’ means ‘a love of’ and ‘Sophia’ means wisdom— if you are a student who loves pondering the enduring questions that face us all, then the brand new GBHS Philosophy Club is calling for you.

The Philosophy Club will hold a twenty-minute meeting on Thursday, October 12th at 7am sharp, and then every Thursday from 7am-7:20 after that.  All meetings are in room M 119.  During the first meeting, Club founders will briefly share why we believe a Philosophy Club will enhance our GBHS community.  We will also choose the topic of discussion for our next meeting.

For each topic or question we select our Faculty Advisor, Dr. Kidd, will quickly share with us what the greatest minds have said on the topic or issue we select. At the following meeting, we will discuss the issue among ourselves.

Dr. Kidd will also help us incorporate what we discuss into our college essays, if we choose.  Later this year, there will be opportunities for enrichment experiences, such as field-trips and college visits.

To join or for more information please see Dr. Kidd in M 119 anytime, or, the Club President.

Hope to see you on Thursday, October 12th in M 119 at 7am sharp.
