Dear Parents of the Class of 2018,

As we prepare for graduation for the Class of 2018 there are a few changes to our graduation traditions of which you need to be aware.  Last year, AACPS adopted a Latin Honors System in order to recognize the academic achievement of our outstanding seniors at commencement.  This new tradition will continue again this year and for years to come.  As with past graduations, the Senior Class President will bring welcome remarks and introduce our distinguished guests.  Beginning this year, for the student speaker, each high school principal will provide notice to all summa cum laude seniors that they have an opportunity to apply to be the graduation student speaker.  The student speaker will be selected by a school-based committee from a pool of applicants that have earned the Summa Cum Laude Honor.  The selection will occur no later than April 15th, and the school-based decision will be final.  Please encourage your seniors to embrace this change in tradition.  Note: Our Valedictorian and Salutatorian will still sit on stage to be honored and their name and achievement designation will be announced during their diploma presentation.
