Glen Burnie High School Dance Company and Dance Program

GBHS Dancers have performed and provided entertainment for many events and organizations, including: The Severn School Dance Concert, Chesapeake Center for the Creative Arts “A Celebration of Dance,” “Helping Give Hope” benefit for NCEON, the Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival, the Anne Arundel County Board of Education Human Relations Celebration, the Northern Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce “Education Excellence” dinner, the Kennedy Kreiger Institute “Festival of Trees,” Marley Station Mall, Annapolis Mall, Glen Burnie Mall, Chesapeake Acedemy, World Trade Center in Baltimore, Maryland Media Educations Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Association, and the Anne Arundel County Retired Teachers Association. Members have performed at Anne Arundel Community College for the Maryland LEA Superintendent’s Secretaries Organization, the Anne Arundel County Teacher of the Year Banquet, Cambridge Maryland Christmas Festival of Lights, the Glen Burnie Rotary, the EDA/AAHPERD Dance Gala in Washington, D.C., the MAHPERD Convention, the National Dance Week Presentations at the Anne Arundel County Board of Education, the GBHS Cultural Arts Evenings and Assemblies, along with numerous nursing homes and elementary and middle school shows. Dance students have performed in Anne Arundel County Dance Festivals and The Maryland High School Dance Showcases. Dancers also participate in GBHS’s “Evening of Dance” production held twice a year, which features all dance classes at Glen Burnie High School. Dance Ensemble has performed for the Council of Metropolitan Arts Supervisors at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and for the Design in Motion Benefit at Anne Arundel Community College and various other events state-wide!   • The Glen Burnie High Dance Program has been very active this year with over 300 students enrolled in “10” dance classes taught during the school day by Ms. Rosso and Mrs. Wirth each semester. After school the GBHS Dance Company, Clubs, and Junior Dance Company have been very busy rehearsing each week for a variety of performances.
  • Eric Holmes received the 2012 Excellence Award in Dance from the “National Society of Arts and Letters” at The Kennedy Center.
  • Caitlyn Powers received the 2013 Excellence Award in Dance and Madisyn Wisner received the Merit Award for 2013 as well.
  • Rebecca Cook, Samantha Dehner, Eric Holmes, Caitlyn Powers and Kreghan Rebstock were selected as All County Dancers 2012 – 2013, demonstrating excellent academic, attendance, leadership and advanced dance ability.
  • GBHS dancers and parents will travel with Ms. Rosso on four Saturday day trips to New York City to take dance classes and attend Broadway shows.(Next two scheduled trips to New York City are April 6 and May 18. Send e-mail if intrested to
  • GBHS Dance Company members preformed for our Pep Rally and the Anne Arundel County Schools’ CRASC Convention and will be preforming on four nights of the Anner Arundel County Dance Festivals later this year.
  • “The National Dance Education Organization” has granted the GBHS Dance Program the honor of being named a National Honor Society for Arts Chapter 133 and we will induct our first group of dancers very soon!
  • For the 24rd consecutive year, GBHS was chosen to participate in and perform for the Maryland High School Dance Showcase. Alex Cancel-Sanches’s dance was selected to be presented at this major event! Erik Holmes and Madisyn Wisner were presented All-State awards for thier dance technique and academic accomplishments at the event as well.
  • The GBHS Dance Program took on the task of having new black curtains bought and installed on our stage. With the help of the Drama and Music Departments, and the Board of Education, we now have new curtains!
  • GBHS Dance Alumni Nate Hunt’s choreography was selected to be performed on the stage at the Kennedy Center May 26th in the National College Dance Festival! He has been choreographing for Long Island University in New York and has also been showcased at the Manhatten Movement Center in New York City! Another GBHS Dance Success story!
  • Reghan Rebstock and Alex Cancel-Sanchez won the 2013 Male and Female GBHS Dance Award for Excellence in Dance.
  • Eric Holmes and Alex Cancel-Sanchez received dance scholarships from the GBHS Dance Department!
  • Mrs. Wirth and I pride ourselves with the ongoing development of student choreographers. Our concert is a testimony to the student centered teaching style we feel so strongly about, which not only builds creativity in our students, but also builds real world skills in all who touch our Program!

The GBHS Dance Program


  1. “The Dance Company” and “The Junior Dance Company” – Made up of advanced level students who perform for state and county festivals, area schools, malls and community organizations.
  2. “Dance Classes” – All dance classes are open to all GBHS students during the school day. Classes may be taken each semester in Dance I, Dance II, Dance III, Dance IV, Dance for the Athlete, and Dance Company Class.
  3. “Dance Club” – Open to students who wish to involve themselves in developing dance abilities and performing in the “Evening of Dance.”

*All students interested in being involved in the dance program are highly encouraged to sign up for daily dance classes which are offered during the day and can be taken for P.E. Elective and Fine Arts Credit.

“Did You Know…”

  • Ms. Rosso began the dance program here 41 years ago and it is one of the “largest” dance programs in a public high school state-wide taught during the school day for credit.
  • Mrs. Wirth was a member of Ms. Rosso’s Dance Company and now teaches Dance here at GBHS!
  • All students who take dance classes appear in two dance concerts held in the winter and spring.
  • The GBHS Dance Company has been selected each year to perform state-wide in the Maryland High School Dance Showcase. They also perform for the Anne Arundel County Dance Destival, at area schools, malls, and for community organizations.
  • Students who take dance classes during the school day have the opportunity each semester to travel to New York City to see the show at Radio City Music Hall or Broadway musicals, and take dance classes at Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre and Broadway Dance Center plus tour the city with their family and friends.   • Students from The Dance Program have gone on to become High School dance teachers, performed in college dance companies, have danced with professional companies, danced on Broadway, with Disney, headlined in Las Vegas and with the Radio City Music Hall’s Famous Rockettes and have opened dance studios of their own.
  • Each student who takes dance receives credit, plus: develops strength, flexibility, rhythm, timing, coordination, footwork, speed, poise, and self-confidence, to name a few.
  • The Dance Program has been featured in Dance Teacher Magazine, Dancer Magazine, AAHPERD National Journal, Fox News, CBS Sports, the Washington Post and all local newspapers!
